১৯৪৭ সালে ভারত - পাকিস্তান বিভক্ত হওয়ার পরপরই বাংলাদেশের রাজনীতি পটভূমি শুরু তথা স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাস এর স্বপ্ন এদেশের মানুষের মনে প্রাণে বাসা বাঁধতে থাকে। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় ১৯৭১ সালে এক রক্তক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধের মধ্যে দিয়ে বাংলাদেশ নামক একটি স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ মানচিত্র রুপ লাভ করে। বাংলাদেশের ম্যাপ এ সাধারণত তিন দিকে ভারত ও মায়ানমার এবং সর্ব দক্ষিণে বঙ্গোপসাগর অবস্থিত। এছাড়াও বাংলাদেশের উত্তর পূর্ব কোনে ভারতের সেভেন সিস্টার্স নামে যে জায়গাটি রয়েছে তা বাংলাদেশ মেপ এর সিলেট অঞ্চল দ্বারা বেষ্টিত। বাংলাদেশের 64 জেলার ইতিহাস পর্যালোচনা করলে দেখা যায় যে, স্বাধীন বাংলার স্বাধীনতার ইতিহাস এ প্রথমে মোট জেলা ছিল ২২ টি। পরবর্তীতে আস্তে আস্তে ভাগ হতে হতে জেলা হয় ৬৪ টি আর এখন বিভাগ হয়েছে ৮ টি। জেলা ও বিভাগ বাড়ার সাথে সাথে বাংলাদেশের সংবিধান ও পরিবর্তন - পরিবর্ধন ও সংস্করণ হতে থাকে।
