Awarded Heritage Coast status in 1972 this particularly special fourteen-mile stretch of the Vale of Glamorgan features dramatic cliffs, fascinating rock formations, sandy beaches, great surfing waves, secluded romantic coves, lighthouses, historic towns and buildings all set against a backdrop of rolling countryside.
The unique characteristics and conditions of the seashore have resulted in a coastline that is home to a vast array of species. It's a real draw for bird-watchers who can look out for Choughs, Fulmars, Bar-tailed Godwits and Peregrine Falcons to name but a few.
The area has been home to settlers from as early as 500 BC and is rich with evidence of Iron-Age hill forts, medieval castles, monastic granges and grand houses. St Illtud's church in the town of Llantwit Major lies on the site of one of the oldest centres of learning in Britain!
