WELKOM IN HET JAAR 1742
Vlakbij de Duitse grens, in het prachtige Westerwolde, ligt de vesting Bourtange. Een uniek historisch verdedigingswerk dat zijn gelijke niet kent. Heden en verleden gaan perfect samen in deze kleine, sfeervolle vestingstad.

In 1580 gaf Willem van Oranje opdracht om op een zandrug in het Bourtangermoeras, op de grens met het huidige Duitsland, een fort aan te leggen. In 1593 werd de vesting in opdracht van Willem Lodewijk van Nassau opgeworpen. Tussen 1593 en 1851 was Bourtange een belangrijke vesting. Toen de vesting in 1851 werd opgeheven ontstond een agrarisch dorp. Slechts een aantal gebouwen herinnerden nog aan de glorie van vroeger. In de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw nam de gemeente Vlagtwedde het initiatief om de vesting te reconstrueren. Het plan werd uitgevoerd tussen 1967 en 1992. Wallen werden opnieuw opgeworpen, grachten werden gegraven en soldatenbarakken werden gebouwd. Bezoekers van het Bourtange van nu wanen zich eeuwen terug in de tijd. Maak kennis met de vesting die nooit werd ingenomen.

Musea
Uw bezoek aan de vesting is incompleet als u de diverse musea en exposities niet hebt gezien. In de vesting treft u een viertal gebouwen aan, waarin u een indrukwekkende reis maakt door de geschiedenis van Bourtange. In het informatiecentrum kunt u hiervoor een combinatie-entreekaart kopen.

Groepsbezoek
Voor elke groepsgrootte en elk budget kunnen leuke programma’s worden samengesteld.

Overnachten
Er zijn acht logementen met bedstee en vier logementen met een normaal bed. Schrik niet. U hoeft niet zittend te slapen in de bedstee, zoals vroeger het geval was! Op zoek naar een onvergetelijke romantische overnachting? Reserveer dan nu één van onze prachtige vestinglogementen.
