Jane Austen's third book, Mansfield Park, was first published in 1814 by Thomas Egerton. John Murray wrote a second edition in 1816, when Austen was still alive. The novel did not receive any public reviews until 1821.
Fanny Price is the protagonist of the book, which starts when her overburdened family sends her to live with her affluent aunt and uncle at the age of ten and continues into her early adulthood.
From the beginning, critical interpretation has been varied, with disagreements centred on the heroine's character, Austen's views on theatrical performance, the centrality or otherwise of ordination and religion, and the issue of slavery.
