About this app

As the central news collection agent of the State, and the only media institution in Liberia with a national spread, LINA promotes a viable, united and cohesive nation by highlighting stories that engender national development, integration, reconciliation and peace.

The Liberia News Agency (LINA) began operation in 1978 in earnest ahead of the 1979 Summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the forerunner of the African Union (AU), a continental body of African nations, convened in Virginia, outside the Liberian capital, Monrovia.

Operating up to the onset and partly during the Liberian civil conflict that started in 1989, the agency suffered a major setback when its facilities were destroyed in the nearly 14-year fighting.

In addition to mainstream journalism, the Agency is also embracing the social media to diversify and pluralise its platform for telling the Liberian story to the world, respecting the tenets of good journalism.

Realizing the crucial role of democracy in sustaining the peace and stability of the nation, the Agency’s reportage will highlight issues of good governance, transparency and accountability, as well as matters of health, women and children, environment, economy, youth, infrastructure development and free speech, among others.

Today, the agency covers the length and breadth of Liberia and is a major source of news and information from rural Liberia to the local media and from Liberia to key subscribers across the globe.

LINA is in the process of seeking to become an autonomous agency through an Act of the National Legislature.
