An experienced dermatologist easily distinguishes the manifestations of the disease from other dermatitis. Several spots appear on the body, more reminiscent of a rash. They quickly increase in diameter, reaching 7-8 cm, begin to peel off. If you do not start treatment for psoriasis, inflamed areas cover up to 50-60% of the body.

The following symptoms help distinguish psoriatic plaques from lichen or allergies:

They have clear edges, slightly thickened and rise above the skin, provoking slight swelling and redness. The scales are light almost silver.
Exfoliated particles are easily scraped off the surface, leaving the surface as if covered with wax.
After removing the inflamed scales, a thin red film from new cells is visible, which glistens in the light.
When trying to tear off the film, droplets of blood appear (Auspitz phenomenon).
These are the main signs of psoriasis that help to conduct a self-diagnosis. The first manifestations are observed at the place of rubbing with clothes, after abrasions or thermal burns, resembling non-healing wounds. But there are several options for placing papules on the patient's body:
On hands. Small foci can be localized on the fingers, crusting elbows. In rare cases or with advanced form, the process affects the forearm.
On the head. A common form is diagnosed with the appearance of particles and crusts on the scalp. Inflammation begins on the back of the head, gradually passes behind the ears, accompanied by burning and copious dandruff, resembling a crown.
On the body. With a drop-shaped form, small plaques abundantly cover the stomach, hips, and back. Often the problem is observed after treatment of infections with antibiotics.
On the palms and feet. Palmar-plantar psoriasis begins with several small plaques, but quickly grows into large areas covered with whitish skin. Sometimes itchy crusts occur only between the fingers.
On the face. A rare form with localization on the thin skin of the eyelids, around the lips with rashes on the cheeks.

Recently, the number of children in whom psoriasis manifests itself long before puberty has increased. In babies, the first papules hide in the folds of the skin in the groin, axillae, on the neck. They itch, causing discomfort and loss of appetite. Parents often take them for a manifestation of atopic dermatitis.
