Great artists always sing live. And on television too. If it turns out that the performer just opens his mouth to the soundtrack (in English this is called lip synching), a terrible scandal flares up.
In the late eighties, a real sensation in the world of pop music was made by the exotic pop duo Milli Vanilli. For two months, two dark-skinned, muscular guys won the hearts of music lovers with their rhythmic melodies and incendiary dances. Their debut album, "All or Nothing," which appeared on the shelves of European stores in mid-1988, was among the best-selling pop music in history. Songs such as "Rain is to blame", "Girl, you know that it’s true", "Baby, don’t forget my number", "Girl, I miss you without you" got into the hit parades of several countries. Immediately five compositions of the duo were on the "chart" of the American edition of Billboard, and three of them took off to the very top! Only the king of pop Michael Jackson with the Thriller album could boast of such results in the eighties.
The success of the Milly Vanilli duo was joined by the venerable producer Frank Farian, the same one who stood at the origins of the Bonnie M disco group. He was one of the first to understand that with the advent of music channels, the appearance of the singers, their way of staying on stage, the ability to start the crowd will play a decisive role in the success of the ensemble.
Farian bought the most advanced video editing equipment. His digital audio studio on the outskirts of Frankfurt has become the Far Studio studio and hardware complex with a full production cycle, including the manufacture of matrices for industrial replication of discs.
Farian invited professional musicians to record the first Millie Vanilli album: 46-year-old Brad Howell and 36-year-old John Davis (both great vocalists, arrangers and composers), talented singer Gina Mohammed, rapper Charles Shaw, and backing vocalists of the Rocco sisters - Jody and Linda.
Material for the debut album was recorded in three months. Rhythmic dance music is designed mainly for youth audiences, so age-old vocalists Davis and Howell could hardly have become her idols. Therefore, Farian decided to make "the face of the group" sexy Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus, invited from the dance club. These flexible guys perfectly mastered the fashion break dance.
Rob Pilatus was born in 1965 in New York in the family of an American military and German stripper. He grew up in Munich. Rob had a difficult childhood. He spent some time in an orphanage in Bavaria.
Fabrice Morvan was a year older than his partner. He was born on the island of Guadeloupe, lived in Miami, then moved with his mother to Paris, where he became interested in trampolining. An absurd injury cut short his sports career.
In 1984, fate brought Pilatus and Morvan to Munich. Both dreamed of conquering the pinnacle of show business and for this they sang, danced, posed as models. Farian gave them a chance, and sin was not to take advantage of them. In "Milli Vanilli" the guys had to sing on stage to the soundtrack, star in videos, give interviews. As for the vocal data, the teacher Seth Riggs rated them as average, although both took the top note "si".
In 1988, the duo made its debut on television. The clip "Girl, You Know That is True" was noted by the public and music critics. Having received the "promotion" first in Germany, and then in England, the pop duo becomes the darling of the English MTV channel. Frequent appearance on television allowed the group to take a leading position in the European "charts". Mindful of the angry attacks of critics about the fact that in Bonnie M the exotic soloist Bobby Farrell sang in the voice of Farian himself, the producer decided not to reveal the secret of the duo Millie Vanilli.
