नारद पुराण में कहा गया है कि उपवास के महत्व के रूप में लिखा गया है- गंगा के समान कोई दूसरा तीर्थ नहीं है, माता के समान कोई गुरु नहीं है, भगवान विष्णु जैसा कोई देवता नहीं है और उपवास जैसा कोई तप नहीं है। एकादशी व्रत को उपवासों में सर्वोपरि माना गया है। प्रत्येक माह में दो एकादशी होती हैं। यदि अधिक (या लौंद) महीना है तो उस महीने की दो अन्य एकादशी होती हैं।
