Rastas, or the Rastafari Movement, is a new religious movement that recognizes Haile Selassie I, the former emperor of Ethiopia, as the King of Kings, the Master of Lords and the Lion of Judah as Yah (the Rastafari name for God, which is the shortened form of Jehovah found in the Psalms 68: 4 in the King James Version), and part of the Holy Trinity. The name Rastafari comes from Ras Täfäri, the name Haile Selassie I before he was crowned emperor. This movement appeared in Jamaica among working-class blacks and peasants in the early 1930s, derived from an interpretation of biblical prophecy, black social and political aspirations, and the teachings of their prophet, a black Jamaican publisher and organizer, Marcus Garvey, whose political and cultural vision helped to create a new worldview. This movement is sometimes called "Rastafarianism"; but this is considered inappropriate and offensive to many Rastas.

The Rastafari movement has spread throughout the world, primarily through immigration and its interest is born by Nyahbinghi and reggae music - especially the music of Bob Marley, who was baptized by the name of Berhane Selassie (the Trinity Light) by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church before he died, a move also taken later by his widow, Rita. In 2000, there were more than a million Rastafari around the world. About 5-10% of the Jamaican population identifies itself as Rastafari. Most Rastafarians are vegetarian or eat only certain types of meat. In the US there are many West Indian vegetarian restaurants, which provide Jamaican food.
