Fizika so`zi yunoncha «phusis»-tabiat so`zidan olingan bo`lib, uning qonunlari barcha tabiatshunoslik bilimlarining asosida yotadi. shuning uchun ham uni uzoq vaqt tabiat falsafasi ham deb ataganlar. Tajribaviy materiallarning ko`payishi, ularning ilmiy umumlashtirilishi va tekshirish usullarining takomillashtirilishi natijasida, tabiat falsafasidan- astronomiya, himiya, biologiya, geologiya va boshqa tabiiy fanlar, jumladan fizika ham ajralib chiqqan. Shuning uchun ham fizikaning boshqa tabiiy fanlar bilan chegarasi shartli bo`lib vaqt o`tishi bilan, o`zgarib boradi. Inson bilimining chuqurlashuvi bu fanlar orasida yanada chambarchas bog`lanish mavjudligini ko`rsatdi. Buning natijasi sifatida esa –astrofizika, fizikaviy himiya, biofizika, geofizika kabi fanlar vujudga keladi.

Fizikaning qonunlari ma`lumotlarga asoslangan bo`lib, asosan tajribalarda o`rnatilgan va matematik tilda ifodalangan miqdoriy tenglamalardan iboratdir. shu sababli, u aniq fanlar qatoriga kiradi.
O`rganiladigan material harakatlari, shakllari va ob`ektlarning ko`p qirraliligiga asosan fizika bir qator qismlarga bo`linadi:
1. Atom va molekulyar fizika;
2. Gaz va suyuqliklar fizikasi;
3. Qattiq jismlar fizikasi;
4. Plazma fizikasi;

Fizika fani eksperimental va nazariy fizikaga bo`linadi. Eksperimental fizika tajribalar asosida yangi ma`lumotlar oladi va qabul qilingan qonunlarni tekshiradi. Nazariy fizika tabiat qonunlarini ta`riflaydi, o`rganiladigan hodisalarni tushuntiradi va yuz berishi mumkin bo`lgan hodisalarni oldindan aytib beradi. Amaliy fizika ham mavjud (masalan: amaliy optika yoki amaliy akustika).

Fizikaning tarixiy rivojlanishi. Fizika tarixini 3 davrga bo`lib o`rganish mumkin: 1) qad. zamondan 17-asrgacha bo`lgan davr; 2) 17-asrdan 19-asr oxirigacha bo`lgan davr. Bu davrdagi fizika fani, odatda, klassik fizika nomi bilan yuritiladi; 3) 19-asr oxiridan hozirgi paytgacha bo`lgan davr. Hozirgi zamon fizikasi (yoki eng yangi fizika) shu davrga mansub.
