4-3 Outside LB's need to be strong to push blockers back if a run is coming to their side, and they need to be quick and fast enough to get around blockers to ensure that pass plays in the flat to that side of the field don’t come to fruition.

4-3 Middle LB's need to have the vision and speed to cover the whole field, but most importantly, they need to be powerful enough to be able to stop the momentum of opposing running backs.

3-4 Outside LB's need to beat blockers to put pressure on the backfield and quarterback. They are essentially glorified defensive linemen half of the time. Speed and intelligence are the most important attributes for a 3-4 outside LB's. Plus, the 3-4 outside LB's needs to be able to switch roles on the fly because it’s a difficult situation when one gets past his blocker only to see a run coming to his side of the line.

3-4 Inside LB's need to do everything.
