About this app

Hear cricket sounds just like you would in nature!

Nothing says summer like the melodious chirping of crickets in the grass on a warm evening! Unlike notoriously loud and annoying insects such as cicadas, crickets play their song in a tone that is typically more tolerable or even enjoyable to the human ear. Crickets make their unique sound not with vocal cords, but rather by rubbing their wings together much like a stringed instrument being played with a bow. The cricket moves the top of one wing against the textured edge of the other wing, producing their signature noise. These bugs, which are related to grasshoppers, come in many of different species, all of which have a slightly unique sound.

We all know the relaxing sounds of crickets chirping on a nice summer night.
What most of us don’t know, though, is why they are singing these songs of summer.
It just so happens that there is more than one reason behind the sounds that these insects create.

How do they make the sounds?
Interestingly enough, only male crickets can make these chirping sounds. They do this by either rubbing their long hind legs on their wings or simply rubbing their wings together. The ribbing on the wings intensifies this sound. In addition, warmer temperatures typically allow for faster movement and therefore more chirping.

What do they mean?
Chirping can mean one of three things…

-A male is trying to attract a female
-A male is about to fight another male
-They are warning others of a threat

Crickets Inside Your House?
If the cricket chirping has suddenly gotten louder in your house, it's likely that they have made it inside and sadly there is no easy way to silence crickets. The peaceful cricket noise isn't so nice when they have managed to get inside and keep you wide awake at night. Even worse, crickets can spread illnesses to humans through a bite, physical contact, or even with their feces. While you may just be annoyed by one, more are likely to get inside and leave you with cricket problems in the fall and winter.
