About this app

La Fondazione del Monte San Giorgio, costituita nel 2008, è l’ente preposto per parte svizzera alla gestione del sito naturalistico transnazionale del Monte San Giorgio.
Il riconoscimento internazionale di questa montagna è stato confermato dalla sua iscrizione nell'Elenco del Patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO, avvenuta nel 2003 per il versante svizzero e nel 2010 per quello italiano.
I motivi di questo riconoscimento sono costituiti dal fatto che il Monte San Giorgio è da annoverare tra i più importanti giacimenti fossiliferi del Triassico medio al mondo, un periodo geologico compreso tra 247 e 236 milioni di anni fa. I fossili di questa montagna, noti per la loro varietà e per l’eccezionale stato di conservazione, sono stati portati alla luce e analizzati a partire dal 1850 da paleontologi svizzeri e italiani.
Oltre ai compiti di divulgazione, promovimento e valorizzazione di patrimonio mondiale del della montagna, alla Fondazione è affidata la gestione del nuovo Museo dei fossili del Monte San Giorgio di Meride. Questa struttura, realizzata su progetto dell’arch. Mario Botta, è stata inaugurata nell’ottobre 2012.
