আত্মা হচ্ছে জীবনী শক্তির এক চিন্ময় স্ফুলিঙ্গ যা প্রত্যেকটি দেহকে ক্রিয়াশীল করে, সেটিকে বিভিন্ন ক্রিয়াকলাপ সম্পাদনে সক্ষম করে, ঠিক যেমন ইলেক্ট্রন কণার স্রোত তামার তারের মধ্যে প্রবাহিত হবার সময় শক্-এর সৃষ্টি করে। দেহকে একটি গাড়ীর সঙ্গে তুলনা করা যেতে পারে, আর আত্মাকে তুলনা করা যায় গাড়ীটির চালকের সংগে। আত্মা সেই জীবনের এক স্ফুলিঙ্গ, যার উপস্থিতির ফলে দেহকে জীবন্ত বলে মনে হয়, আর যখন আত্মা দেহটি ছেড়ে চলে যায়, তখন আমরা বলি যে লোকটি মৃত।
