According to the Vamana Purana she was created from the combined energies of the gods when their anger at the demon Mahishasura manifested itself in the form of energy rays. The rays crystallized in the hermitage of Katyayana Rishi, who gave it proper form therefore she is also called Katyayani or "daughter of Katyayana".Elsewhere in texts like Kalika Purana, it is mentioned that it was Rishi Kaytyayana who first worshiped her, hence she came to known as Katyayani. In either case, she is a demonstration or apparition of the Durga and is worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri festival.

Goddess Katyayani is the sixth manifestation of Durga. She is known to destroy the demonic forces of nature by killing demons and sinners. It is said that the trinity of Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, got infuriated and they created a Goddess by apportioning some part of their energy, in order to destroy the demon. The sage Katyayana had the first privilege to worship her, so she was called Katyayani. Devi Katyayani represents that anger that arises in Creation to restore and revive the principles of Dharma and truth. Katyayani is that force behind the mental power that controls life and death.

Mata Katyani is the warrior Goddess who sits on a lion and has 3 eyes and 4 hands; holds a sword in one left hand and a lotus in another hand. She with her power annihilated the demon Mahishasura. She rules the Ajna Chakra. Worshiping Her blesses the devotee with the power to see beyond illusions and perceptions and destroy definitions. Her true devotion opens the third eye of devotees which give powers of clairvoyance and awaken intuition and wisdom to kill the Mahishasura within.
