DJ Arafat (born Ange Didier Houon1 in Yopougon on January 26, 1986 and died of an accident on August 12, 2019 in Abidjan2) is an Ivorian singer, composer, producer and musical arranger.
He is considered one of the greatest singers in sub-Saharan Africa and the king of the coupé-décalé, having had considerable influence on Ivorian musical culture3.
In the beginnings of the cut-off-shifted movement, the DJ officiating in one of the largest maquis of Abidjan, Shanghai, is spotted by the young producer Roland Le Binguiste who takes him to the studio. This is how he released a discography that reveals it to the general public with the tribute piece to Jonathan in 2003, part of the clip was made at the Treichville Sports Park with the presence of Douk Saga and Mulukuku DJ. Very young, Didier Houon had many Lebanese friends in Abidjan, who constantly nicknamed him Yasser Arafat, the former leader of Fatah and the Palestine Liberation Organization. Indeed, it was attributed the temperament of the leader of Fatah. He decided to make this nickname his stage name.
DJ Arafat is one of the pioneers of coupé-décalé, which he contributes to popularize first in France and then around the world.
In 2015, he won the title of most influential African artist internationally by Forbes Africa and TRACE Africa4.
