Common University Entrance Test (CUET)
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is an all-India examination which has been formulated under the National Education Policy (NEP) as a single examination for different programs of participating Universities. It covers all graduate programs in Humanities, Commerce, Science and even Engineering.
The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the first edition of this exam was held in 2022. In 2023, more than 250 universities participated in CUET which included distinguished universities like Delhi University (DU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). This number of participating universities is likely to go up to 500 in 2024.
In 2023, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) witnessed a remarkable surge in popularity, drawing nearly 14 lakh applicants. This marked a significant 41% increase in the number of applicants compared to the previous year. Such an increase not only highlights CUET's growing prominence but also positions it as the second-largest entrance examination in India after NEET.
With a vision of “One Nation, One Entrance Exam," CUET will become mandatory for almost all graduate courses in India in the future. The CUET will be required for all students finishing their +2 to get into any university, regardless of their field of study. In the future, this test might become the first step in exams like the JEE and NEET, making it a stepping stone to clearing these prestigious exams.
The CUET seems like one test, but it includes three separate tests combined into one. Almost all the CBSE school students will take the first test of the English Language which is different from the English asked in the CBSE Board Exam. This test evaluates students on Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Vocabulary. The second test is based on the Domain Subject (Class XII Subjects). A student can take up a minimum of 2 domain subjects and up to 6 domain subjects which he may or may not have taken as class subjects. CUET covers only the NCERT +2 syllabus. The third test is the General Test which has Basic Mathematics, Basic Reasoning and Mental Ability and Basic General Knowledge Questions.
