We all enjoy guessing the colours of the rockets before they ignite in the sky, hearing the explosions echo off nearby buildings, or writing our names in light with hand sparklers. Everything thing has two sides. As Fireworks are good for enjoyment it also have lots of effects in our surrounding. Fireworks can lead to substantial air pollution problems. Fireworks can have significant effects on air pollution in enclosed spaces, too. And of course, what goes up has to come down, fireworks that fall to the ground contain residues of unburnt propellants and colourants, while particle pollution in the air eventually deposits on the ground or gets washed out by rain. Some of this finds its way into lakes and rivers, where percolate has been linked to many problems, causing limits to be set for drinking water. Fireworks also contribute a lot in global warming by rise in greenhouse gas emissions that change the climate for worse. The dust storm and smoke produced by fireworks contain potential gases like titanium, mercury, lead, barium, copper, lithium and various chemicals that combine to produce deadly chlorine gas. Firework contributes to acid rain, smog, and water pollution. To some extend Fireworks also leads to Child Labour. Children have been employed in the largely cottage industry to fill gun powder into fireworks and sparklers and are directly in contact with the chemical ingredients with no gloves or protective equipment. The chemicals used for these fireworks vary from the conventional gunpowder and iron fillings to present day ones like potassium nitrate, barium and strontium nitrates, aluminium and magnesium powder and sulphur.
Initially it was used to make large types of fireworks only but nowadays it is used in smaller items like rockets & flowerpots also.
It has been observed by studies based on recorded data that the pollutant concentrations in air increase manifold during the Diwali season with average increases of 6 to 7 times in suspended particulate matter and twice in sulphate + nitrate levels, as compared to a typical winter day value. These concentrations shot up to 12 and 5 times respectively in the night of Diwali whereas the metal concentrations increase by 50-60 times!
Also, according to International Labour Organization, more than 80 million children worldwide are employed in dangerous work.The best way to tackle fireworks is not to have them at all.
