Let the English medium Science learning come in Sri Lankan style
How it began?
I have been a science teacher over a decade. Since 2004, I engaged in numerous Science teaching-learning activities. Each and every lesson I have conducted was an innovation. Each year I lived with Science teaching, was a research to find best ways to teach science.
Teaching with a foreign language
Sri Lanka is a multi-lingual and multi-ethical country. The majority speaks Sinhala or Tamil languages. English the international language is a strange language to most of the Sri Lankans. It was a challenge to share the knowledge via English to the students who come from common society. The teachers who use chalk & talk methodology are unable to overcome this challenge successfully. At one stage of my teaching career, I decided to diverge from traditional teaching methods.
Beginning of a private education institute
First I tried to implement innovative Science teaching strategies in the government schools. But there was a limit that we could go with a kind of institution lead by conventional and unadoptable administration. Most of the financial rules and regulations of Sri Lankan Schools stand in between the innovative teachers and the students. Origin of SciTime institution was the option to break this barrier.
Science, English medium and the metamorphosis
Butterflies begin their lives as unpleasant caterpillars. But they finish their life cycle as an attractive beautiful creatures. This is what we called as the metamorphosis. How does it link with Science learning? When a student achieve his higher education most of the courses and researches are conducted in English language and the reference resources available are also in English. This is the best reason to learn Science in English medium. But it is not easy to adopt to a foreign language for the students who speak Sinhala or Tamil. Therefore we took the challenge, to give you opportunity to learn Science in English medium more passionately.
SciTime opens the third eye of the life
SciTime is a different studying space for the Science students. It has resources, which students can use to learn Science through exploration. It is also equipped with some of the more interesting things that you find in Science which might stir some interest of yours. We love to do demonstrations of science concepts as well as try to incorporate the latest discoveries in Science into the classroom. We also integrate computer applications and creative animations into the science lessons to enhance the learning experience further.
