શ્રીમદ્ ભગવદ્ ગીતા એ હિંદુ ધર્મનો પ્રાચીન અને મુખ્ય પવિત્ર ગ્રંથ છે. ગીતા હિંદુ ધર્મ ગણાતો હોવા છત્તા એ ફક્ત હિંદુ પ્રત્યે સિમીત ન રહેતા પુરા માનવસમાજ માટેનો ગ્રંથ ગણાય છે અને વિશ્વચિંતકોએ તેમાંથી માર્ગદર્શન લીધુ છે. ગીતા માનવને - પૃથ્વીના પુત્રને સંબોધીને કહી છે. હિંદુ ધર્મનાં ઘણા ધર્મગ્રંથો છે પરંતુ ગીતાનું મહત્વ અલૌકિક છે. ગીતાને સ્મૃતિ ગ્રંથ માનવામાં આવે છે.

ગીતામાં કુલ ૧૮ અધ્યાય અને ૭૦૦ સંસ્કૃત શ્લોકો છે. પુરી ગીતા થોડા શ્લોકોના અપવાદ સિવાય અનુષ્ટુપ છંદમાં છે.

ગીતાનો સમયકાળ આશરે ઇ.સ. પૂર્વે ૩૦૬૬ માનવામાં આવે છે.
