Mrs. Bennet is anxious to see all her daughters, named Jane Bennet, Elizabeth Bennet, Mary Bennet, Kitty Bennet and Lydia Bennet, married well. This is because the family estate can only be passed to a male heir when Mr. Bennet dies.
The book revolves round the comedic plot of Mrs Bennet trying to find a wealthy match for at least one of the girls, to support the others.

Mr Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest daughter, Jane Bennet, while Mr Darcy is disdainful of local society, and repeatedly clashes with the lively Elizabeth.
