About this app

Big Ben a popular tourist name of the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster. The official name of the tower from 2012 is the Tower of Elizabeth. Initially, Big Ben was the name of the largest of the five bells but often this name is mistakenly referred to both the clock and the clock tower as a whole.

It is believed that the bell was named Big Ben in honor of Sir Benjamin Hall the curator of construction work. According to another version it is named after Benjamin County Russian. A popular boxer in the heavyweight division.

The official name until September 2012 was the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster in the press it was often called the Tower of St. John the Baptist. By decision of the British Parliament was renamed the Tower of Elizabeth in honor of the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

The tower was built according to the design of the English architect Augustes Piugin in the Neo-Gothic style in 1859 the tower clock was launched on May 31, 1859.

The height of the tower including the spire 96.3 meters. The lower part of the clockwork is located at an altitude of 55 meters.
