Budidaya ikan nila tidaklah sulit. Ikan nila masih satu kerabat dengan ikan mujair. Kedua ikan ini mempunyai kemiripan sifat. Mudah berkembang biak dan mempunyai kemampuan adaptasi yang baik.

Di alam bebas, ikan nila banyak ditemukan di perairan air tawar seperti sungai, danau, waduk dan rawa. Suhu optimal bagi pertumbuhan ikan nila berkisar 25-30oC dengan pH air 7-8.

Ikan nila termasuk hewan pemakan segala atau omnivora. Makanan alaminya plankton, plankton, tumbuhan air dan berbagai hewan air lainnya. Pakan buatan untuk budidaya ikan nila sebaiknya berkadar protein sekitar 25%. Biaya pakan untuk budidaya ikan nila relatif lebih murah. Tidak seperti budidaya ikan mas atau ikan lele yang membutuhkan pakan dengan kadar protein tinggi, sekitar 30-45%.
