গীতা ১০।৩৫নং এ বলা আছে-

"ছন্দ(মন্ত্র) সমূহের মধ্যে আমিই (পরমাত্মাই) গায়ত্রী।"
(গীতা ১০।৩৫)

গায়ত্রী বেদের সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ মন্ত্র। সমগ্র বেদের জ্ঞান সূক্ষ্ম ভাবে গায়ত্রী মন্ত্রে আছে বলেই ইহাকে বেদমাতা বলে। গায়ত্রী মন্ত্র গায়ত্রী ছন্দে রচিত। পরমাত্মার ধ্যানের জন্য গায়ত্রী সিদ্ধ বৈদিক মন্ত্র। এই মন্ত্রের দ্রষ্টা ঋষি বিশ্বামিত্র এবং দেবতা সবিতা। ঋষি বিশ্বামিত্র সর্বপ্রথম এই মন্ত্রের মর্ম্ম উপলব্ধি করে প্রচার করেছিলেন। মন্ত্রের দেবতা বা বিষয় সবিতা অর্থাৎ জগৎ-স্রষ্টা ব্রম্ম।

বেদারম্ভ সংস্কারে আচার্য এই মন্ত্রে ব্রম্মচারীকে দীক্ষা দান করেন। গানকারীকে ত্রাণ করে বলে এই মন্ত্রের নাম গায়ত্রী। প্রতিদিন উপাসনায় গায়ত্রী মন্ত্র জপ বা পাঠ করা আবশ্যক। গায়ত্রী মন্ত্রে দশটি শব্দ আছে। যেমন- তৎ, সবিতুঃ, বরেণ্যম্, ভর্গঃ, দেবস্য, ধীমহি, ধিয়ঃ, যঃ, নঃ, প্রচোদয়াৎ। গায়ত্রী মন্ত্রের পূর্ব্বে প্রণব মন্ত্র "ওঁ" এবং "ভূর্ভুবঃ স্বঃ"(ভূঃ, ভুয়ঃ, স্বঃ) যোগ করে উচ্চারণ করতে হয়।

বৈদিক গায়ত্রী মন্ত্রে আদলেই অন্যান্য দেবতার গায়ত্রী রচিত হয়েছে, দ্রষ্টব্য গণেশ, শিব, বিষ্ণু প্রভৃতি ।

হিন্দু বিধান অনুসারে, সকাল, দুপুর ও সন্ধ্যায় গায়ত্রী ধ্যান করতে হয় এবং এই মন্ত্র ধ্যান বা পাঠে মুক্তি প্রাপ্ত হয় বলে এর নাম ‘গায়ত্রী ‘। প্রতিদিন উপাসনায় গায়ত্রী মন্ত্র জপ বা পাঠ করা আবশ্যক।
