Baaba Maal (or Baba Maal [ref. Necessary]) is a Senegalese singer and guitarist of Fulani origin.
He was born on June 13, 1953 on the banks of the Senegal river, in Podor in the Fouta-Toro region in the north of Senegal, in a family of fishermen.

He learned to play kora and various traditional instruments within the group Lasly Fouta, before traveling around West Africa with his griot friend and visually impaired Mansour Seck and 70 other musicians.
After a passage in Paris where he studies western music at the Conservatory and plays with the group Wandama, he forms in Dakar in 1985 the group Daande Lenol (the voice of the people) with Mansour Seck. Daande Lenol adds modern instruments such as keyboards and electric guitar to traditional tones and regular songs. They record Wango in 1988 and Djam Leeli.
A tour in Europe in 1990 made him known to Peter Gabriel who will make him participate in his album Passion. From 1990 to 1993, Baaba Maal recorded Taara, Baayo and Lam Toro, three albums which brought him recognition in Europe.
But worldwide success came in 1994 with Fir 'in Fouta and the title African Woman.
