पशुधनाच्या आहारासाठी पारंपारिक पध्दतीने वैरण साठवून आवश्यकतेनुसार पुरविण्यांत येते. धान्य पीक काढल्यानंतर उर्वरीत पिकांचे अवशेष (क्रॅाप रेसीडयू) जसे, ज्वारीचा कडबा, बाजारीचे सरमाड, गव्हाचा भूसा, भाताचा पेंढा व इतर गवत इत्यादी वैरणीचा ढीग किंवा गंजी रचून, तसेच शेडमध्ये ठेवून साठविण्यांत येते व पुढील वैरण उपलब्ध होईपर्यन्तच्या कालावधीत उपयोगात आणली जाते. परंतू, हिरवी वैरण लवकर खराब होत असल्याने हिरवी वैरण साठवून उपयोगात आणण्यास अडचण निर्माण होते.
