About this app

Historically, Walisongo or Walisanga were the leaders of the spread of Islam in Java in the 14th century. They lived in three important areas of the north coast of Java Island, namely Surabaya-Gresik-Lamongan-Tuban in East Java, Demak-Kudus-Muria in Central Java and Cirebon in West Java.

The presence of Walisongo is the era of the end of Hindu-Buddhist domination in the culture of the archipelago to be replaced with Islamic culture. They are a symbol of the spread of Islam in Indonesia, especially in Java. Of course many other characters also play a role. But their enormous role in establishing the Islamic Kingdom in Java, as well as its influence on the culture of society at large as well as direct da'wah, made these Walisongo more widely referred to than others.

Meaning Walisongo

There are several opinions regarding the meaning of Walisongo. The first is nine guardians, which denotes the number of guardians there are nine, or sanga in Javanese. Another opinion states that the word songo / sanga comes from the word tsana which in Arabic means noble. Another opinion says that the word comes from Javanese, which means place.

Another opinion that says that Walisongo is a da'wah assembly was first founded by Sunan Gresik (Maulana Malik Ibrahim) in 1404 AD (808 Hijri). The Walisongo were reformers of society during their time. Their influence is felt in various forms of manifestation of new Javanese civilizations, ranging from health, farming, commerce, culture, art, society, to government.
