นกเขาใหญ่(Spotted dove) เป็นนกที่มีหางยาว ลำตัวเพรียว ยาว 28-32 เซนติเมตร มีสีน้ำตาลอมแดง ขนปีกออกดำมีขอบสีเทาด้านใน หน้าและท้องส่วนล่างมีสีเทา มีแถบสีดำจุดขาวคาดบริเวณคอด้านหลังซึ่งไม่พบในนกวัยอ่อน ขาสีแดง ร้องเสียงต่ำดัง "วุ่ก-วุค-ครู่" หรือ "วุ่ก-วุค ครู่, คุก" นกเขาใหญ่กินเมล็ดธัญพืชเป็นอาหาร ชอบอาศัยอยู่ตามทุ่งนา ป่าโปร่ง แหล่งที่มีการเพาะปลูกพืชไร่ มักอยู่เป็นคู่และขันคูในตอนเช้าเย็น มักลงมาหากินตามพื้นดิน เวลาขันจะมีเสียงไพเราะ จึงนิยมนำนกเขาชนิดนี้มาเลี้ยงกันอย่างแพร่หลาย จะมีช่วงฤดูผสมพันธุ์ในช่วงเดือนพฤษภาคม-มิถุนายน ทำรังอยู่บนต้นไม้ใหญ่ โดยใช้กิ่งไม้ขัดสานกันทำให้เป็นแอ่งเพื่อวางไข่ ปกติจะวางไข่ครั้งละ 2-3 ฟอง นกเขาใหญ่มีถิ่นอาศัยในเอเชียทางใต้จากประเทศปากีสถาน อินเดีย และ ศรีลังกา ทางตะวันออกถึงตอนใต้ของประเทศจีนและเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
