تدور الأحداث في مزرعة القصر التي يمتلكها السيد جونز ذلك المزارع قاسي الطباع، في ليلة من الليالي الغير معتادة في المزرعة تجمعت الحيوانات في الحظيرة لتستمع إلى الخطاب الذي سيلقيه عليهم العجوز ميجر ويحكي فيه الحلم الذي رآه في الليلة الماضية، العجوز ميجر هو أكبر الخنازير سننًا في المزرعة وأكثرهم حكمة، لفت العجوز ميجر نظر الحيوانات إلى حياتهم البائسة في مزرعة السيد جونز وجهودهم المبذولة لإرضاء السيد جونز أو خوفًا من عقابه، فهتف فيهم بضرورة تغيير الوضع الراهن وضرورة إشعال الثورة وتحقيق المساواة بين الحيوانات، ثم قص عليهم حلمه الذي ظهرت فيه الأرض خالية من الإنسان والذي ألهمه لتذكر أغنية “حيوانات إنجلترا” وبدأ يغنيها ببراعة أشعلت الحماسة في نفوس الحيوانات.
