Ang Alamat ay bumabanggit sa matatandang kuwentong-pabulang nasasalig sa pangyayari noong unang panahon at tumutukoy sa kahalagahan ng pangkaraniwa’y tungkol sa diyos o bayani.

Ang Alamat ay sali-salimuot na kuwentong ang layunin ay magpaliwanag ng sagisag ng mahahalagang balangkas ng buhay. Halimbawa: kung paano nagkahiwalay ang lupa at langit; o kung bakit mataas ang langit; kung bakit umuulan matapos marinig ang huni ng ilang uri ng ibon; bakit dilaw ang kilyawan; bakit ang likod ng kamelyo ay usbong at mataas; ang pinagmulan ng sibilisasyon sa pamamagitan ng bayani ng kalinangan tulad ni Prometheus na nagdala ng apoy; at ang pinagmulan ng ugali tungkol sa pananampalataya at lipunan.

Inilalarawan ng alamat ang pagtanggap sa mapait na katotohanan ng buhay – panganib, sakit, masamang kapalaran, kamatayan – sa pamamagitan ng pagpapaliwanag na ang mga ito’y bahagi ng pakikipagsapalaran sa daigdig.
