About this app

SpectrumAnalyzer has a very simple interface consisting primarily of an onscreen ON/OFF switch. The normal output is a display of the Fourier spectrum of the audio picked up by the microphone. No advertisements.

There are a few options available via the Android Menu key. The user may toggle to switch between a white or black background. The user may also view the actual sound waves directly (as opposed to viewing their frequency spectrum).

The duration of the sound snippet is 0.1 second.

I have noticed that there are two lines at 7,200 and 14,400 Hertz while developing Spectrum Analyzer. I suspect these sounds are emitted from the hard disk that runs at 7200 RPM. Outside, I noticed crickets chirping around 5,600 Hertz.

To learn more about frequency spectra see the one-page tutorial on our website, https://sites.google.com/a/andwaves.com/www/home/about-fourier-transforms

The program uses the new Google licensing standard. In theory this means the program can be copied to an SD card, freeing up internal memory in the Android, although I haven’t tried it.

New features

Modified threading so SpectrumAnalyzer runs more reliably on a variety of Android devices. It has been tested on an Evo 4G and a Samsung Moment.
FFT reduced from 1024 samples to 512 samples. This is because screens typically don't have more pixels in width than around 500 pixels.
Runs on API-3 emulator.
