The March of Volunteers was originally the credits of The Children of China (风云 儿女) (1935), a film about the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). On September 27, 1949, it became the temporary national anthem as it alluded to a strong historical moment in China and emitted energetic music reflecting Chinese revolutionary traditions since the end of the Qing Dynasty. But during the Cultural Revolution, Tian Han was accused of being anti-revolutionary and tortured to death. The anthem could no longer be sung, just played.

On March 5, 1978, the lyrics were changed. However, many people demanded the original words, and so on December 4, 1982, The March of Volunteers found its original words and was proclaimed the official national anthem of the People's Republic of China.
