Ragga music (or Raggamuffin music) is a distinct sub-category of reggae or dancehall music that has been established in Jamaica the 1980s, at a time when electronic dance music has gained increased popularity throughout the world. Ragga is characterized by instrumentation that is principally comprised by electronic music, with drum machine, samplers, and synthesizers taking the lead role in its creation.

One of the main reasons that ragga music achieved faster proliferation is the fact that it is largely simpler and less expensive to produce compared to reggae which is actually performed on traditional music instruments. A certain population of ragga musicians had the belief that incorporating hip hop with their music has a certain appeal and is key to international marketability of their music.

This belief has actually been proven, as ragga music has gained a critical mass of audience in the English-speaking world and thereby contributed to astounding success of dancehall.
