Black metal is an extreme metal sub-classification of Heavy metal music that started in the early-to-mid 1980s, with influences from hardcore punk, thrash metal, and death metal. In terms of vocal elements, classic Black metal artists employ raspy and high-pitched vocals that include screaming, shrieking, and snarling. This vocal style separates Black metal from Death metal which often incorporates low-pitched growls.

For instrumentation, the bass guitar rarely makes stand-alone melodies. Fast double bass, blast beats, or both are common in drumming. Many Black metal bands prefer not to play live, while some bands view deem their concerts as rituals often with theatrics and stage props. Recordings are usually raw or lo-fi especially for early Black metal musicians with limited budgets.

Black metal musicians’ apparels typically include black clothing with bullet belts, spiked wristbands, combat boots, and inverted crosses/pentagrams. Most notable is their use of use of corpse paint – black and white makeup which is every now and then blended with fake or real blood, to evoke a corpse-like representation.
