Motown (from the words “motor” and “town”) music is a kind of soul music that was popularized by Berry Gordy Jr.’s American record company. The record company was key in developing the trademark "Motown Sound".

This music genre used tambourines (for accent/back beat), electric bass guitar (for melody), and it was sung with a call-and-response singing style borrowed from gospel music.

Some of the key artists and bands are Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Miracles, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations. The style developed by these musicians became a huge influence on many non-Motown artists starting in the middle of the 1960s. In the United Kingdom, this music influenced the northern soul movement.
