******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

Mariachi music is a kind of folk music which originated from Mexico in the 18th century. The music started as “Son Jaliscience”, a regional folk music style originally performed with purely string instruments and artists dressed in white pants and shirts normally worn by peasant farmers. This was later re-labelled as the “Son style”, with “mariachi” as the alternative urban form. Influences from other music styles like waltzes and polkas as well as addition of instruments like trumpets helped shape Mariachi. The music achieved national fame during the first half of the 20th century.

Typically, current Mariachi groups are comprised of at least one guitar, two trumpets, and eight violins. Traditional Mariachi guitars include a guitarron (bass guitar) and vihuela (a high pitched round-backed guitar).
