******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

Banda is a type of Mexican music that is predominantly brass-based and group-performed. It has been established in state of Sinaloa, Mexico in the 1880s and eventually reached widespread popularity across Mexico in the 1890s.

A Banda group typically uses woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments, with the tambora as the most notable music instrument used. Banda groups perform a medley of songs that include corridos, cumbias, rancheras, boleros, and baladas.

Bandas are most popular for rancheras, although they also perform modern Mexican pop, cumbias, and rock. Most Banda music appeals to traditional German and Polish music and polka fans because Banda is a dialect of polka (Germans lived in Mexico at the time).

Some of the renowned Banda groups include La Banda el Recodo, Banda MS, La Arrolladora Banda El Limón, Cuisillos, Banda Jerez, Banda Los Recoditos, and La Original Banda El Limón. Although Banda is a male-dominated genre, there have been a few female soloist banda-singers that entered this music scene like Shaila Durcal Ana Gabriel, Ana Bárbara, Graciela Beltrán, Carmen Jara, and the late Jenni Rivera. Among these, La Banda el Recodo has been called the “mother of all bands.”
