Alternative country (sometimes just alt-country), insurgent country, or Americana, is a sub-category of country music that is loosely defined, and includes groups and artists that vary considerably in terms of style, from mainstream or pop country music. Alternative country music defines country music artists and bands that have infused influences ranging from bluegrass, rockabilly, honky-tonk, folk rock, alternative rock, and at times even punk.

Jason and the Scorchers and Long Ryders (of the 1980s Southern Californian cowpunk scene) were widely regarded as pioneers in taking a stab at fusing punk with country music. The group Uncle Tupelo showcased the two music styles fully merged in his 1990’s LP, No Depression. This LP album was then recognized as the first "alt-country" album.
