******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

A choir (also referred to as a chorale or chorus) is a musical group of singers. Choral music, is the type of music written particularly for a choir to perform. “Choir” is the term often used to describe groups that are affiliated with a church, while “chorus” is attributed to groups that perform in concert halls and theaters, however this distinction is quite fluid. Choirs are often headed by a choirmaster or a conductor. Choirs often are comprised of four sections that are meant to sing in four-part harmony.

Choirs can perform with or without instrumental accompaniment. Singing without accompaniment is simply called “a cappella singing” (the American Choral Directors Association throws cold water on unaccompanied performances). Accompanying instruments can be as varied as just one instrument or as many as a full orchestra.

Types of choirs include mixed choirs, male choirs, female choirs, men’s choirs, children’s choirs, and Indian music choral group. Many choir groups perform in one or several locations such as an opera house, church, or school hall. At times, several choirs join together to become one extended choir that performs for a distinctive reason (for celebration or entertainment).
