This app will take you on a tour back in time to when Sir Richard Arkwright pioneered the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill with an introductory tour of the main mill complex and surrounding area including Cromford Village.
Follow the route and hear more about the secrets of Sir Richard Arkwright’s work; how and why he choose Cromford to build his mills and find out more about the revolutionary techniques he used to make it an international success.
During the tour you will visit The Cromford Canal Wharf, a Site of Special Scientific Interest which is abundant in both history and wildlife, St Mary’s Church where the great man is laid to rest along with other members of this great dynasty and on up into Cromford Village. Follow in the footsteps of the hundreds of mill workers to see and hear more about daily life and Sir Richard Arkwright’s entrepreneurial ideas
The app takes you on a tour of the Mill workers houses in North Street and the historic Market Place and Greyhound Hotel, the School which is still in use today and the Village Lock Up where the unruly were locked up in a small cell. Follow the route back down to the main mill complex where you will find a number of exhibitions, events and activities for all the family.
