هكذا بدأ خالد روايته، وتجري أطوارها على خلفية أحداث مضطربة عرفتها أفغانستان، بدأت بسقوط النظام الملكي في البلاد، ثم التدخل العسكري السوفييتي، وبعده نزوح اللاجئين إلى باكستان والولايات المتحدة وصعود نظام طالبان، لتحكي لنا عن قصة أمير، إبن العاصمة كابول وصديقه المقرب حسن، صديقان من عالمين مختلفين. فأمير هو ابن رجل أعمال ثري، أما حسن فهو ابن خادمهم الذي ينتمي إلى الهزاره، الأقلية العرقية المنبوذة، وكيف شهدت طفولتهما كل أوجه الصداقة الحقيقية والتضحية، خاصة حسن الطيب الذي جسد أسمى معاني الوفاء والطيبة والتي عبر عنها الكاتب بقوله ""إنه وفي، وفي ككلب !".



في وقت تنازعت فيه أمير مشاعر الصداقة من جهة والتشبث بطبقية مقيتة من جهة أخرى، طبقية وأنانية ظهرت أقذر تجلياتها في تلك الحادثة المريرة، بعد فوز أمير بمهرجان الطائرات الورقية، ثم الاعتداء جنسياً على حسن من قِبل آصف، ليفضل أمير الصمت والعودة من حيث أتى على ألا يفقد الطائرة التي ستجلب له ثقة أبيه وفخره.



تجتاح القوات السوفياتية أفغانستان إثر أحداث سياسية عاصفة ضربت البلاد، فيضطر والد أمير للهرب والهجرة بإبنه إلى الولايات المتحدة الامريكية باحثا عن حياة جديدة، ليركز الكتاب بعد ذلك على محاولة أمير التكفير عن ذنبه القديم الذي أصر على ملاحقته وإنقاذ نجل صديقه في أفغانستان بعد مرور عقدين من الزمان تغير فيها الكثير على أرض هذا البلد الذي قدر له ألا يرتاح، كل هذا وعبارة واحدة تتردد في ذهنه:

"من أجلك ألف مرة...ومرة!"، فهل سيتمكن أمير من التكفير عن ذنبه وإنقاذ ابن صديقه؟



كمية المشاعر في هذه الرواية كبيرة جدا، وطبيعي أن تنتزع من كل من قرأها تأثرا شديدا وحزنا على حال هذا البلد الجميل الذي ألفنا عنه تلك الصورة النمطية المرتبطة بالحرب.
