About this app

Sight and Song Augmented is an augmented-reality application that brings together poetry and painting. In response to a target image (the painting, whether the actual artwork hanging in the museum or a print or digital reproduction), it performs the corresponding poem from the 1892 volume Sight and Song by Michael Field (Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper). These poems are descriptive interpretations of artworks by the Old Masters that Bradley and Cooper saw in museums around Europe. This type of writing ("a verbal representation of a visual representation," in the words of James Heffernan) is called ekphrasis, and in it a writer seeks to teach us how to observe the visual object. The premise of this app is that we can learn not only about the art and the poetry, but about our multi-sensory experience of the world through bringing text, image, and voice together in augmented reality.

In its initial release, Sight and Song Augmented provides augmentations for six paintings in The National Gallery in London (five of which are currently on display). Updates will feature first the six paintings in The Louvre in Paris, and then those found in museums in Italy and Germany.
