శ్రీ విష్ణు సహస్రనామ స్తోత్రము అత్యంత ప్రాచుర్యము కలిగిన ప్రార్థనలలో ఒకటి. పేరును బట్టి ఇది శ్రీమహావిష్ణువు వేయి నామాలను సంకీర్తనం చేసే స్తోత్రము. ఈ స్తోత్రాన్ని చాలామంది హిందువులు భగవంతుని పూజించే కార్యంగా పారాయణం చేస్తూ ఉంటారు.

విష్ణు సహస్ర నామ స్తోత్రము మహాభారతం లోని అనుశాసనిక పర్వం లో 149వ అధ్యాయంలో ఉన్నది. కురుక్షేత్ర యుద్ధానంతరం అంపశయ్య మీద పండుకొని ఉన్న భీష్ముడు ఈ స్తోత్రాన్ని యుధిష్ఠిరునకు ఉపదేశిస్తాడు. ఈ స్తోత్ర పారాయణం సకల వాంఛితార్థ ఫలదాయకమని ఆ విధమైన విశ్వాసం ఉన్నవారి నమ్మకం. స్తోత్రం ఉత్తర పీఠిక (ఫలశ్రుతి)లో ఈ శ్లోకం "ధర్మార్థులకు ధర్మము, అర్థార్థులకు అర్థము, కామార్థులకు కామము, ప్రజార్థులకు ప్రజను ప్రసాదించును" అని చెప్పబడినది.

విశ్వం అనే నామంతో మొదలైన సహస్ర నామ జపం సర్వ ప్రహరణాయుధ అనే వెయ్యవ నామంతో ముగుస్తుంది. ఈ ప్రధాన స్తోత్ర భాగంలో 108 శ్లోకాలలో వేయి నామములు పొందుపరచబడి ఉన్నాయి. పరమాత్ముని వివిధ లక్షణ గుణ స్వభావ రూపములు వివిధనామములలో కీర్తించబడ్డాయి. అనంత గుణ సంపన్నుడైన భగవానుని వేయి ముఖ్యగుణములను కీర్తించే పుణ్యశబ్దాలుగా ఈ వేయి నామాలను సాంప్రదాయికులు విశ్వసిస్తారు.

విష్ణు సహస్రనామాలను గురించి పెక్కుభాష్యాలు వెలువడినాయి. 8వ శతాబ్దంలో ఆది శంకరాచార్యులు రచించిన భాష్యము వీటిలో ప్రథమము. అద్వైత సిద్ధాంతము ననుసరించే ఈ భాష్యంలో భగవంతుని పరబ్రహ్మ తత్వమునకు, షడ్గుణైశ్వర్యమునకు ఎక్కువ ప్రాదాన్యతనిచ్చి వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. 12వ శతాబ్దంలో పరాశర భట్టు రచించిన భాష్యము విశిష్టాద్వైతం సిద్ధాంతాలకు అనుగుణంగా సాగుతూ, భక్తుల పట్ల భగవానుని సౌలభ్యాన్నీ, సౌశీల్యాన్నీ, కరుణనూ మరింతగా విపులీకరించినది. తరువాత అనేకులు రచించిన వ్యాఖ్యలకు ఈ రెండు భాష్యాలే మార్గదర్శకాలు.
