About this app

Al-Jinn (Arabic: الجن‎, “The Jinn”) is the 72nd chapter (surah) of the Quran (Qur'an / Quraan) with 28 verses (ayat). The name as well as the topic of this chapter is jinn. Similar to angels, the jinn are beings invisible to the naked human eye. In the Quran (AlQuran / AlQur'an), it is stated in more than one instance, that humans are created from the earth and jinn from smokeless fire.

Chronology:
Although Al-Jinn is a Meccan / Makki surah, it is generally agreed that it was revealed much later than any other surat contained in Juz' Tabaraka -lladhi (which covers surahs 67 to 77). Abdullah Yusuf Ali says that it is "tolerably certain" that Al-Jinn was revealed around 2 B.H. when Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was evangelising near present-day Ta'if. Maulana Muhammad Ali agrees with the date of around 2 B.H., saying that this surah was revealed at a time when opposition to the Prophet's message was reaching a climax.

Exegesis / Tafsir:

In the second verse the jinn recant their belief in false gods and venerate Muhammad for his monotheism. The jinn apologize for their past blasphemy and criticize mankind for either neglecting them or encouraging their disbelief.

The Judgement in verse 7, and the punishment in verse 25, are both references to the Islamic Judgement Day, Qiyamah.

Verses 20-22 are especially important as Monotheism (tawhid) among the Jinn is reaffirmed and the inescapable wrath of God is emphasized.

Verses 25-28 establish that Qiyamah is known only to God, and that God takes into account all the deeds of a man when judging him.

The designation of the Chapter reflects that it mainly treats of invisible creatures, the jinn, their belief in the Noble Prophet of the Islamic faith (S), the Holy Qur’an, and Resurrection, and the groups of believers and disbelievers amongst them. The closing Verses concern the knowledge of the unseen unknown to all beings besides Allah Almighty.

It is narrated from the Noble Imam Sadiq (as) as saying:

One who recites Surah al-Jinn many a time will never suffer from the evil eye, magic, and ploys of the Jinn and magicians but will accompany Muhammad (S). O Lord! I believe in none besides him and I will never turn toward anyone but him.

Reciting the blessed Chapter would be a prelude to the awareness of its contextual meaning and applying it to one’s life.

1. Imam as-Sadiq (a.s.) said: Whoever recites it often would neither be affected by the evil eye of Jinn in his worldly life, nor can there be any effect on him of sorcery, now can any harm occur to him through any kind of machination or Satanic action of the Jinn.
Also the reciter of Surah Jinn would be in the company of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and his Progeny (a.s.).
2. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: Whoever recites Surah Jinn, for him there is great reward and the person who recites Surah Jin would remain safe and protected from Jinn.
Surat al-Jinn
This ‘makki’ Surah has 28 ayaat. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) that frequent recitation of this Surah is a protection from Jinn and the reciter will be in the company of the Holy Prophet (S) on the Day of Resurrection. This Surah also protects one from the evil actions of an unjust person.
Prisoners secure early release by reciting this Surah and those who recite it properly will never face poverty.
