Surat ad-Dukhan (Arabic: سورة الدخان‎, "Smoke") is the 44th chapter (sura) of the Quran with 59 verses. The first verse is one of Quran's Muqatta'at, the letter combinations that appear in the beginning of some chapters. Verse 37 mentions the people of Tubba, interpreters explain that this refers to the people of Sheba. The word dukhan, meaning 'smoke', is mentioned in verse 10.

Regarding the timing and contextual background of the supposed revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), it is an earlier "Meccan / Makki surah", which means it is believed to have been revealed in Mecca (Makkah), instead of later in Madinah a.k.a Madina.

Its period of revelation also could not be determined from any authentic tradition, but the internal evidence of the subject matter shows that this Surah too was sent down in the same period in which Surah Zukhruf and a few other earlier Surahs had been revealed. However, this Surah was sent down somewhat later.

Its historical background is this: When the disbelievers of Makkah became more and more antagonistic in their attitude and conduct, the Holy Prophet prayed: O God, help me with a famine like the famine of Joseph. He thought that when the people would be afflicted with a calamity, they would remember God, their hearts would soften and they would accept the admonition.

Allah granted his prayer, and the whole land was overtaken by such a terrible famine that the people were sorely distressed. At last, some of the Quraish chiefs among whom Hadrat Abdullah bin Masud has particularly mentioned the name of Abu Sufyan came to the Holy Prophet and requested him to pray to Allah to deliver his people from the calamity.

Whoever recites ad-Dukhan(44) on the night of al-Jum’ah, 70,000 angels will ask for forgiveness for that person until morning”. If anyone recites surat Dukhan in the night he will see the morning while 70,000 angels seek forgiveness for him.”

Hazrat Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu reported Allah’s Messenger (S.A.W) as saying, "If anyone recites Ha-mim Al-Dukhan any night, seventy thousand angels will ask forgiveness for him in the evening."(Tirmizi)

Surah ad Dukhan

It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (S) that if this Surah is recited at night, then seventy thousand angels pray to Allah (S.w.T.) to forgive the sins of the reciter. If recited on Thursday nights, all sins are forgiven and houses are built for the reciter in Jannah. The reward for reciting each letter of this Surah is equal to that of freeing a thousand slaves for seeking the pleasure of Allah (S.w.T.).

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) said that whoever recites Surah ad-Dukhan in his faraa’idh (compulsory prayers) will be protected from the torment of the Day of Judgement and will easily be able to give his accounts.

Hadees:
Narrated Masruq ibn al-Ajda': One day I went to Ibn Masud who said, "When Quraish delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet I invoked Allah to curse them, so they were afflicted with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate the carcasses and Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet and said, 'O Muhammad! You came to order people to keep good relation with kith and kin and your nation is being destroyed, so invoke Allah I ? So the Prophet I recited the Holy verses of Surat Ad-Dukhan: 'Then watch you For the day that The sky will Bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible.'
