Beliau adalah yang mulia Abu Abdillah Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Hanbal bin Hilal bin Asad bin Idris bin Abdillah bin Hayyan bin Abdillah bin Anas bin Auf bin Qasith bin Mazin bin Syaiban bin Dzuhl bin Tsa’labah bin ‘Ukabah bin Sha’ab bin Ali bin Bakr bin Wail bin Qasith bin Hinb bin Afsha bin Du’mi bin Jadilah bin Asad bin Rabi’ah bin Nizar bin Ma’ad bin Adnan dan terus keatas hingga sampai Nabi Ismail bin Nabi Ibrahim as.1

Nasab Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal bertemu dan menyambung dengan silsilah Nabi Muhammad saw sampai pada Nizar, karena yang menurunkan Nabi Muhammad saw ialah Mudhar bin Nizar; yaitu kakek Beliau yang kedelapan belas.

Ayahanda beliau; Muhammad bin Hanbal tercatat sebagai bagian dari pasukan perang Khurasan, bahkan sebagian riwayat menyebutnya sebagai komandan pasukan.

Adapun kakek Beliau; Hanbal bin Hilal adalah seorang pejabat di daerah Sarokhsi pada masa pemerintahan Bani Umayyah hingga masa awal Bani Abbasiyah. Sedangkan ibunda beliau bernama Shofiyyah binti Maimunah binti Abdil Malik as-Syaibani.

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal -dalam riwayat yang kuat- lahir di kota Bahdad, ibukota pemerintahan Bani Abbasiyyah ketika itu, di bulan Rabiul Akhir pada tahun 164 H (780 M) yaitu pada masa pemerintahan Khalifah Muhammad al-Mahdi. Dan di kota Baghdad inilah Imam Ahmad lahir, tumbuh dan berkembang hingga beliau wafat.
