سبب نزول السورة أن كفار قريش كانوا قد طلبوا من نبي الله سيدنا محمد صل الله عليه وسلم أن يقوم بعبادة الأصنام والآلهة التي يعبودنها لمدة سنة كاملة وفي حال قام عليه الصلاة والسلام بقَبول هذا العرض والطلب فهم بدورهم سيقومون بعبادة الله سبحانه وتعالى لذلك فقد أنزل الله تعالى هذه الآيات لتمنع المسلمين من عقد أي اتفاقات أو مفاوضات مع المشركين يكون هدفها إدخال إله آخر في العبادة غير الله عز وجل
