ছড়া সাধারণত স্বরবৃত্ত ছন্দে রচিত হয়। ছড়াসাহিত্যকে শিশুসাহিত্যের অংশ হিসেবে ধরে নেওয়া হয়। যিনি ছড়া লেখেন তাকে ছড়াকার বলা হয়ে থাকে। তবে বাংলা সাহিত্যে যারা ছড়া লিখে বিখ্যাত হয়েছেন তাদের সবাইকেই কবি বা শিশু সাহিত্যিক বলে ডাকা হয়। শিশুদের সাহিত্য সম্পর্কে জানার প্রথম সিঁড়ি হলো ছড়া। ছড়াকে কবিতার মধ্যেই ফেলা যেতে পারে। কারণ ছড়াও কবিতা, শধুমাত্র শিশুদের উপযোগী করা লেখা হয় বলে একে কবিতার ক্যাটাগরি থেকে বাদ দেওয়া উচিত না। তবে ছোটদের কবিতাও বলা যেতে পারে।
