Simplesmente conhecido como João Ferreira Almeida, muito jovem deixou a Igreja Católica, se converteu ao protestantismo e viveu na Indonésia e Malásia, ambos colônias holandesas no Oriente.
João Almeida Ferreira foi o primeiro tradutor da Bíblia em Português. Ele traduziu o Novo Testamento, que foi publicado pela primeira vez em 1681.

Almeida começou a traduzir o Antigo Testamento, mas morreu sem concluir o trabalho para o qual havia dedicado sua vida. Seu último trabalho foi Ezequiel 48.21. Sua obra foi concluída pelo pastor holandês Jacobus op den Akker.

A Bíblia completa em Português foi publicada em 1681. Mais tarde, em 1898, foi revista e uma nova edição foi publicada: "Revista e Corrigida". Novamente em meados do século XX, foi revista e publicada sob o nome de "Revista e Atualizada".

A Bíblia Ferreira João tem duas seções principais: o Antigo e o Novo Testamento.
O Antigo Testamento contém 39 livros (Gênesis, Êxodo, Levítico, Números, Deuteronômio, Josué, Juízes, Rute, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Reis, 2 Reis, 1 Crônicas, 2 Crônicas, Esdras, Neemias, Ester, Jó, Salmos Provérbios, Eclesiastes, Cântico dos Cânticos, Isaías, Jeremias, Lamentações, Ezequiel, Daniel, Oséias, Joel, Amós, Obadias, Jonas, Miquéias, Naum, Habacuque, Sofonias, Ageu, Zacarias, Malaquias).
O Novo Testamento contém 27 livros (Mateus, Marcos, Lucas, João, Atos, Romanos, Coríntios 1 e 2, Gálatas, Efésios, Filipenses, Colossenses 1 Tessalonicenses, 2 Tessalonicenses, 1 Timóteo, 2 Timóteo, Tito, Philemon, hebraicos, James, 1 Peter, 2 Pedro, 1 João, 2 João, 3 João, Judas, Apocalipse).
