About this app

Who is Type Out for?

Type Out is designed for young adults, aged between 13 – 18 years. It is intended for minor incidents only.

What is Type Out for?

When conflict occurs, a young adult may be sent or may decide they need a ‘time out’. This site aims to help them work through the following key areas of conflict resolution:
To reflect on what role they may have played in the conflict
To take ownership of their decisions
To evaluate who was most affected by their actions
To empathise with the other person/s involved
To acknowledge and accept responsibility for any wrongdoing
To learn how to open up a dialogue with the other person involved
To access the language needed for making things right

Why use Type Out?

At the end of the Type Out process, a response is generated automatically. This response is created using the words selected by the user throughout their reflection of what happened. These words function as a script or visual prompt for the user to refer to during the conversation that inevitably follows a conflict. It is essential that this stage be conducted verbally, as it gives the person most affected by the incident an opportunity to feel that their experience has been acknowledged, to discuss any remaining points of contention and ultimately, to find a resolution.

This approach echoes the philosophies that underpin the restorative justice ethos.

What’s Restorative Practice?

Restorative practice asserts that rules are written to keep us safe from harm. So when harm occurs, instead of concentrating solely on the rule broken, the focus is to repair the harm done to human relationships.

The main aims are: to teach the persons involved how to take ownership of their actions, how to acknowledge the impact of their behaviour, how to empathise with others and how to repair the harm done.

It is restorative and it takes practice.

What makes Type Out unique?

Type Out provides a consistent approach to conflict management across different social contexts. Both at school and at home, young adults are learning how to navigate complex interactions between peers, family members, and persons of authority. Tensions build, mistakes are made, conflict occurs and connections between community members are frayed. Although this is a shared issue, an inconsistency exists in the approach used for making things right. Type Out offers a dependable resource that can be accessed at any time and in any context, which in turn provides users with a common language and a shared method for building strong human relationships.
